Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton is not only bound to be royalty; more so, she is destined to be Prince William’s wife. Kate caught Prince William’s eyes while wearing a see-through dress in 2001 during a charity auction event. Destiny, however, has already set the royal couple’s love story even when Kate was just 9 years old.
Katie Nicholl, author of “Kate: The Future Of Queen,” revealed that Kate and Prince William actually first met during their elementary years. Prince William, who was studying at Ludgrove Prep at that time, visited St. Andrews Prep, Kate’s school, to play hockey. The duke played as a left back for his school’s Colts team and went to St. Andrews for a hockey match.
When he arrived, cars and bodyguards scattered around St. Andrews as part of Prince William’s royal security protocol, which attracted curious onlookers. It was at this moment when Kate first set eyes on the Duke of Cambridge.
Kate and Prince William went to the same university in 2001 — University of St. Andrews. And it’s there where their romance began. Kate was one of the prettiest girls in school, and her charm definitely stood out among the rest that it’s hardly possible for a man not to notice her in a crowd, not even for Prince William.
According to stories, Prince William made the first move when he once borrowed notes from Kate. This led to study sessions, which eventually developed into friendship. The two then became friends for more than a year. In 2002, news claimed that Prince William moved out of his dormitory into an exclusive flat with three other friends. Apparently, one of the friends was described as a 20-year-old brunette, who turned out to be Kate.
The friendship between Kate and Prince William grew into something more. The prince, however, started really noticing Kate and fell head over heels with her when she modeled for a charity auction event at the university. Kate, wearing an iconic Charlotte Todd see-through dress, made Prince William exclaim, “Wow, Fergus, Kate's hot!”
Julian Knight, Prince William’s college friend, told CNN that people surrounding Kate and Prince William already knew what was going on with them ages before their relationship was exposed to the media, but everyone chose to keep mum about it. The media blackout, as Knight described it, helped the couple live a normal life within the campus of the University of St. Andrews.
