Hubertus von Hohenlohe is an Olympian that’s been making headlines without having competed yet. First, this Mexican skier revealed the very folkloric suit he will wear to participate at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The ski suit was modeled after a Mariachi suit, in black with a red tie. It was designed by Kappa and features the trimmings of a black bolero jacket, ruffled tuxedo shirt, red tie and cummerbund, and designs down the legs surrounding the initials “MEX.”
After the whole Mariachi ski suit buzz, more details about this interesting man surfaced. Besides being an athlete, turns out he is of German aristocratic descent. He has citizenship in both Austria and Lichtenstein, an Italian mother and Spanish heritage, he’s fluent in five different languages, he’s the heir to an automobile fortune, he’s an artist who was friends with Andy Warhol, he was born in Mexico intentionally so his family could expand their business in that country, and he’s also a photographer.
And it’s this last profession that has got him under hot water right now. Back in 2011 he photographed Jackie Chamoun, a Lebanese skier, for one of his yearly calendars. These calendars usually feature both male and female skiers in various states of undress, and Jackie, who is representing Lebanon at the Olympics this year and also skied in the 2010 Vancouver Games, wasn’t shy for Hubertus’ camera. The result was actually very tasteful and did not reveal any of her lady upper or lower parts as she covered them gracefully with her skis. However, the controversy came when a video featuring the “making of” the photoshoot appeared online with explicit images.
The behind-the-scenes material did show a good look at Jackie’s goods and the explicit video, that wasn’t meant to be public, has caused quite a stir for the Lebanese Olympic committee. According to ABC News, Lebanon’s caretaker sports minister Faisal Karami reportedly called the Lebanese Olympic Committee president and asked him to launch “the necessary inquiries…as soon as possible in order to take the required steps to [avoid] harming Lebanon’s reputation and international participation.”
The committee said the images of Chamoun “do not reflect the real image of the Lebanese sports,” but said it would take no action because the “offense” didn’t take place during the preparations for the Games nor during the Games. The video that has become viral has only affected Jackie, who apologized on her Facebook page. "The photos of the photoshoot are not like the actual images that are now circulating on the net. The video and photos that you are now seeing are part of the making off, the preparation; it wasn't supposed to go public.”
“Anyways,” she added, “I want to apologize to all of you, I know that Lebanon is a conservative country and this is not the image that reflects our culture. I fully understand if you want to criticize this.” As for Hubertus, he just said the images were “not that heavy.” “They’re very elegant and serene,” he told Reuters. He added that he spoke to Chamoun on Tuesday and continued, “she can’t be upset with me. I didn’t put anything anywhere on the Web.”
