Mexican Olympic skier Hubertus von Hohenlohe will be competing in the 2014 Sochil Olympic Games. Despite having citizenship in both Austria and Lichtenstein, an Italian mother and Spanish heritage, Von Hohenlohe will be competing for Mexico - and he is doing it in serious Mexican style. Von Hohenlohe will be competing in a ski suit modeled after a Mexican mariachi suit, in all black with and red tie: all he is missing is a big black sombrero, although this might be against IOC regulations.
Hubertus von Hohenlohe revealed that he almost wasn't going to compete for Mexico. “In the beginning, I remember that I was considering racing for Liechtenstein because I have a Liechtenstein passport,” von Hohenlohe said. “In the end, it seemed ideal that I do it for a country where I could control my own moves.” Having chosen to compete for his birthplace, the Austrian skier decided to go all out with patriotism. Yet this isn't the first time his suit is a bit wild - Von Hohenlohe is known for his outrageous outfits!
The Olympic skier revealed to NBC Olympics, the details of his suit: designed by Kappa, the ski suit features the trimmings of a black bolero jacket, ruffled tuxedo shirt, red tie and cummerbund, and designs down the legs surrounding the initials “MEX.” In Vancouver he chose a suit of similar style, wearing a "Mexican bandido" racesuit which included bullet straps and pistoleros in the design, and another suit environmentally-themed race suit encouraging people to recycle.
“Until I went to Mexico recently to make a documentary, I never realized what a beautiful, amazing, rich past and culture they have and what a proud people they are,” he said. “It actually moved me to see how much they suffered and how much they fought for what they have. The power to have your own identity is so strong and something I believe in so I want to give it a go in a very cool, elegant way. I want to celebrate who they are, but of course in my own style.”
