Audiences were left in anticipation when the final scene of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" featured the glow of the fearsome dragon Smaug's eye. A new trailer, released Tuesday, for the Peter Jackson film and second installment to the three-part "Hobbit" series features breathtaking scenery, perilous fight scenes and finally a full view of the villain's face.

While "Unexpected Journey" largely disappointed audiences after its release last year, this trailer looks to sell to viewers everything that the billion-dollar Lord of the Rings franchise exceled at. It features not much of the main star, Bilbo Baggins -- played by Martin Freeman of "Sherlock" fame -- or his comrades Gandalf, played by Ian McKellen, or dwarf leader Thorin Oakenshield, played by Richard Armitage. Instead it focuses on the views, creatures and tribulations of the film that dazzled us all in the $303 million domestic LOTR trilogy, Variety reported.

The film takes place right where the last left off with the group continuing its quest to find and defeated the detestable dragon Smaug, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, who pillaged and took over the dwarf kingdom of Erebor. The trailer was released six months prior to the film's Dec. 13 release date, giving viewers a chance to view it a week before it is set to play before the new "Man Of Steel" movie. It presents new characters hitting the screen in the sequel, including Legolas, played by Orlando Bloom, who was a favorite in the LOTR trilogy and Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel, a new character created specifically for "The Hobbit" films, Yahoo News reported.

As the trailer draws to a close, audiences can hear a striking sound, to which a dwarf responds "is that an earthquake." Balin, played by Ken Stott, answers slowly, "That my friends..." before the camera turns to a closeup of his face. "...is a dragon," he concludes. The trailer continues on for 20 seconds, picturing Biblo running about the piles of gold hoarded by said dragon until he, too, hears the ominous sound of the creature approaching. Smaug slowly creeps around the corner where Bilbo is hiding, carefully revealing his face, red scales, gruesome fangs and all.

After the film's December release, there will still be one more to go before the battle for Erebor concludes. A full-on shot of Smaug and his speaking voice has not yet been revealed.
