The violent conflict that has been tormenting northern Mexico —concretely the state of Sinaloa— for the past three months has taken another victim. This time around, the family of one of Mexico's most important drug lords during the 1980's and 1990's are the ones impacted by the death of José Cruz Carrillo Jacobo, son of José Cruz Carrillo Fuentes and alleged nephew of Amado Carrillo Fuentes, commonly known as "El Señor de Los Cielos."

The incident reportedly took place along the Culiacán-Eldorado highway, near the ejido of El Quemadito, a few miles outside of Culiacán. The body of Carrillo Jacobo was found inside a warehouse, with local media saying his body had gunshot wounds along his extremities, head and torso.

Authorities say the victim was 24 years old and lived in the nearby municipality of Navolato, the same place where his famous uncle "El Señor de los Cielos" was born.

Authorities are not certain yet if Carrillo Jacobo was a member of any of the two Sinaloa Cartel cliques that have terrorized the state of Sinaloa since September.

Who was "El Señor de los Cielos?"

Amado Carrillo Fuentes, a.k.a. "El Señor de Los Cielos" or "Lord of the Skies," was one of Mexico's most prominent drug lords after taking over as leader of the Juárez Cartel in 1970 by assassinating his boss Rafael Aguilar Guajardo.

Carrillo Fuentes oversaw cocaine shipments in Chihuahua and other parts of northern Mexico for decades. He worked with Pablo Escobar and the Cali Cartel smuggling drugs from Colombia to Mexico and the U.S.

He coined the nickname of "El Señor de Los Cielos" because of the large fleet of jets, planes and helicopters he used to transport drugs across the globe.

Carrillo Fuentes was wanted by authorities in Argentina, Colombia, the U.S. and Mexico. In order to avoid his capture, he underwent several cosmetic surgeries to change his appearance and evade his pursuers.

He died in July 1997 after undergoing extensive plastic surgery. But in recent times his name has gained back a lot of popularity thanks to a television series about his life becoming an international hit in Telemundo and other streaming platforms.

Father and son suffered a similar fate

Carillo Jacobo's father, José Cruz Carrillo Fuentes, died in a similar way to his son but 16 years prior. According to reports, the brother of "El Señor de Los Cielos" was kidnapped and taken to a rural place known as Campo El Diez, southwest of Culiacán.

Family members said José Cruz was kidnapped by military personnel on Oct. 27, 2008. His burned body was found later that day.

Another brother of "El Señor de los Cielos" died earlier this year

Guadalupe Alvarado Carrillo Fuentes was found dead in the municipality of Navolato in August. According to authorities, Guadalupe Alvarado was driving southbound towards Ejido 5 de Mayo when one of his tires blew out.

As he was replacing the tire, he was ran over by another car in the highway, causing him an instant death.
