2023 will likely be remembered for its unprecedented wave of celebrity breakups. Starting with the soundtrack of Shakira's Bizarrap Session 53, the world of Latino celebrities experienced a surge of heartaches from the year's outset.
High-profile separations, like those of Rauw Alejandro and Rosalía, Cardi B and Offset, and Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello, among many others, marked a year of significant relationship upheavals.
Aitana Ocaño, Miguel Bernadeu and Sebastián Yatra
The year kicked off with a jolt in the world of celebrity romance. For fans of Latino entertainment, the final weeks of December brought a somber note. Spanish celebrities Aitana Ocaño and Miguel Bernardeau ('Élite','El Zorro') announced the end of their four-year relationship. The announcement was delayed as they first navigated through the promotion of "La Última," their collaborative Disney+ series, marking a gradual conclusion to their relationship.
Soon after, it became obvious she was in a relationship with Colombian superstar Sebastián Yatra. But after seven months they also called it quits, although both insist that they remain "best friends."
Andrea Legarreta, Galilea Montijo and Tania Rincón become single ladies
2023 also featured a surprising flurry of separations within the cast of Televisa's morning show "Hoy." On February 23, 2023, Andrea Legarreta and Erik Rubín made their separation public via their Instagram accounts. However, they still share a home and several businesses. They both went on screen on several TV shows to explain their new situation.
Tania Rincón was the second to announce her split, revealing on February 28 that she and Daniel Pérez were parting ways after 16 years together as a couple and 12 years of marriage.
Moreover, on March 10, 2023, Galilea Montijo took to social media to announce her divorce from Fernando Reina Iglesias. The couple, married for 11 years, have a child together. Gossip magazines reported an infidelity on Reina's part.
Becky G's broken heart
Five months after their engagement, Becky G's fiancé, Sebastián Lletget, confirmed intense infidelity rumors, revealing that he was willing to do "whatever it takes to earn back" her trust. In a lengthy Instagram statement, the soccer player opened up about a "10-minute lapse in judgment," an alleged "extortion plot" and his decision to commit himself to a "mental wellness program." His post came days after reports that an Instagram user claimed to have "all the proof" of him allegedly cheating on Becky, 26, in February.
"To Becky, you have been the light in my life, my strength, who has always shown me unconditional love," Lletget wrote. "Instead of honoring that love every day, I have done the opposite, hurting you, and disrespecting the one person I love more than anything. I am so sorry and know I have to do whatever it takes to earn back the trust and love you deserve."
Shortly thereafter, Becky G was spotted at Coachella without her engagement ring, appearing heartbroken, though she never formally announced a split. In December, the singer and Lletget were seen at a farmers market close to their previous residence, reigniting rumors of a potential reconciliation.
Rosalía and Rauw Alejandro's very painful goodbye
Rauw Alejandro and Rosalía announced at the end of June that they weren't together anymore. The end of their engagement came amidst swirling rumors and speculations regarding the reasons behind their breakup.
Notably, there were allegations of an infidelity by Rauw Alejandro, which became a focal point of media attention and public discussion. Speculations were rife about his involvement with other women, including Valeria Duque, a Colombian model. The rumor mill churned further when Amor Romeira, on the Spanish program 'Fiesta de Verano,' claimed to have proof of Rauw Alejandro's infidelity with influencer Zaira de la Morena. Romeira's statements added another layer to the ongoing saga, suggesting that there was more to the story than what had been publicly acknowledged.
Throughout these developments, both Rauw Alejandro and Rosalía maintained that their breakup was not due to any third-party involvement. Rosalía, in particular, has been vocal about not paying attention to gossip and rumors, emphasizing that only she and Rauw know the truth of their experiences together.
In August, Rauw dropped "Hayami Hana", a very painful song dedicated to Rosalía, and the final good-bye came at the Latin Grammys, when Rosalía sang "Se nos rompió el amor" with Rauw and his mom in the audience. Rauw replied, by singing "Se fue" soon after.
Sofia Vergara, Joe Manganiello, and Bubbles
In July 2023, after seven years of marriage, actors Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello announced their decision to have a divorce. The couple, who tied the knot in 2015, shared a joint statement requesting respect for their privacy as they navigate this new phase in their lives.
This development came as Vergara celebrated her 51st birthday in Italy, where Manganiello's absence was noticeably seen by her fans. While they insisted that their separation was amicable, the actor kept their dog Bubbles, and soon after he started dating now girlfriend Caitlin O'Connor.
Cardi B drops "dead weight" Offset
Cardi B and Offset's marriage has hit a sensational end, marking yet another tumultuous chapter in their relationship. Cardi B, confirming her newfound single status, openly dismissed cheating rumors against Offset, yet intriguingly stated she doesn't care about verifying them.
The couple's split was dramatically hinted when they unfollowed each other on social media, fueling widespread speculation. Cardi's bold declarations about outgrowing relationships and her vow to eliminate "dead weight" from her life added to the scandal, signaling a fierce and determined reinvention for the coming year.
There were many other celebrity splits, but they seemed less wrenching, such as the breakup between Bad Bunny and Kendall Jenner, Ricky Martin's divorce from Jwan Josef, and the separation of TINI and Rodrigo de Paul.
Of course, not only Latino celebrities got the breakup bug. Among the most unexpected splits of 2023 were the divorces of Hugh Jackman from his wife of 27 years, Deborra-Lee Furness, Britney Spears and Sam Asghari, as well as Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied.
Although she seems to have had a happy ending with Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift broke up this year with Joe Alwyn. Reese Whiterspoon and Jim Toth, and Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner.
Hopefully, 2024 will bring more love than heartache.
