Miriam Carey a dental hygienist from Stamford, Connecticut has been identified as the driver of the black sedan which led police in Washington D.C on a wild car chase that ended with a shooting outside the Capitol building. The working mother was killed in a shootout with police after she fled her black Infiniti Coupe. The incident began when Carey, 34, tried to ram her car through a gate at the White House. Carey's motives for Thursday's events were not known at the time of the car chase and shooting. (1) Now it seems the woman's mental illness was the reasoning behind her erratic behavior yesterday.
After Miriam Carey was killed, police searched her car and found her one-year-old daughter in the back. Carey's mother spoke with ABC News and said that her daughter had been (2) suffering with post-partum depression since having her baby last August. Carey's mother also said "a few months later, she got sick. She was depressed ... she was hospitalized." Carey's mother said she had no idea her daughter was in Washington and believed the woman was taking her one-year-old to a doctor's appointment in Connecticut.
The investigation into Thursday's incident led police to discover Miriam Carey (3) had a history of mental illness. A possible motive for Carey's actions could stem from the fact that she (4) believed President Obama was stalking her. Police have not speculated that this was the woman's motive but reports suggest the woman had been suffering from the delusion for a while. Carey's daughter was not injured and is now in protective custody. Carey's sister Amy Carey, a nurse from Brooklyn told the Washington Post she was in disbelief when she learned about her sister.
"That's impossible," Amy Carey told the Washington Post of her reaction to learning her sister was at the center of the Capitol Hill shooting. "She works, she holds a job. She wouldn't be in D.C. She was just in Connecticut two days ago, I spoke to her ... I don't know what's happening I can't answer anymore." Those who knew Miriam Carey said they were surprised by what has happened. Friends and employers described her as friendly, headstrong and outgoing. A former employer described her "a little rough" but was still shocked that she had been the one behind the wheel in D.C.
