Acclaimed film director Michael Moore predicts Kamala Harris will "win big," pointing to analysis by a likeminded political scientist whom Moore calls "the only pollster I respect."
"Not only is Trump going to lose," he wrote Sunday, "but Kamala Harris is going to win, and win big."
In the final stretch before Election Day, filmmaker and political commentator Michael Moore has boldly proclaimed a Harris victory. Moore's optimism is fueled by the recent analysis of political scientist Rachel Bitecofer, whom he describes as the "only pollster I respect."
"For all of you who have written me this week, unable to sleep, pulling your hair out, lost in a doom scroll, all of us at the precipice of the End of Democracy, I present to you...her very educated gut-feeling about how happy we may end up feeling by the end of this week," Moore wrote as an introduction to Bitecofer's analysis. "It's a good feeling to know we're not alone."
Bitecofer, like Moore, has a knack for unconventional predictions that cut against mainstream punditry—and she suggests that fears of a Trump comeback are unfounded.
While acknowledging the inherent uncertainties of horserace polling, she emphasizes the importance of "hard data like registration data, fundraising data, volunteer data, early turnout data, and field infrastructure" over purely probabilistic models. For Bitecofer, if trends hold, it's "game over for Donald Trump."
"My gut says Harris. All gas, no brakes," she concludes.
"I feel the same way that I felt a few weeks ago — that Trump is toast. I feel it more now." Moore said, referencing his Oct. 4 piece, in an interview on MSNBC.
"I'm feeling optimistic and hopeful," he said. "I have a lot of personal, deep faith in my fellow Americans."
Bitecofer, a former academic with a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, gained notoriety by correctly calling Trump's 2016 upset over Hillary Clinton and has since built a reputation as a lone voice who often sees outcomes before the mainstream does.
