A charity event to be hosted by Melania Trump is under probe after organizers claimed that an undisclosed portion of ticket proceeds would go to a Florida charity that doesn't appear to exist.
According to the office of the former First Lady, she is due to appear at a "high tea" event in Naples, Florida, which would benefit the advocacies of Fostering the Future, an unregistered charity giving computer science scholarships to individuals in foster care.
The said event scheduled on April 9 is meant to raise money for a charity initiative of Be Best, Trump’s anti-bully campaign which she launched while still the First Lady.
However, the Business Insider noted that even the Be Best charity is not legally registered in Florida state, which requires any organizations soliciting donations to submit necessary documents that would secure their enrollment with the Consumer Services Division.
The agency, which oversees charitable fund-raising, has since confirmed they had initiated an inquiry into the event after failing to find evidence that Fostering the Future is registered in Florida. Tickets to the charity drive were priced at $3,000 for regular seats and $50,000 each for limited VIP seats, the Daily Beast reported.
“Consumer Services Division is currently investigating whether this event involves an entity operating in violation of Chapter 496, Florida Statutes,” Erin Moffet, an agency spokeswoman, said in a statement.
Meanwhile, despite declining requests for an interview, Trump would later accuse the media of dishonest reporting via Twitter after the press published articles on the issue. Ultimately, she claimed that paperwork for the charity registration was ongoing.
“Everything has been done lawfully, & all documents are in the works. Read with caution-typical corrupt media,” she said in the tweet after quoting a report from Raw Story. “We are working w/Bradley Impact Fund, a Donor-Advised Fund, to select charities that will receive the donations to foster children.”
An existing website called “Fostering the Future” for the nonprofit organization Children’s Rights Inc. describes in a charity form that it is “advocating on behalf of abused and neglected children.” However, it gave no mention of Trump or the upcoming Florida fundraiser.
Another Fostering the Future charity in Illinois has also been found to exist on the internet but the donation site has no information about the organization, according to Yahoo! News.
