"Masters of Sex" premieres tonight and after all the hype we are certainly hoping Showtime's steamy new drama is a smash hit. The new series is based on the biography written by Thomas Maier, "Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson." Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan play the two pioneering researchers of sex. And if you were hoping for anything but a lot of sex in tonight's pilot you will be disappointed.
Tonight's episode recounts the beginning stages of the pair's professional and personal relationship. If you haven't heard of Masters and Johnson, let me fill you in. The series is based on the life and work of William Masters; he was an American gynecologist who became notable for his work with Virginia Johnson. Masters recruited the young Virginia as his research assistant as he investigated sex, and the human sexual response. Masters and Johnson observed around 700 men and women engaging in intercourse or masturbation in their laboratory, so if you are not interested in some hanky panky, this show is certainly not for you.
In the pilot episode, Masters is just beginning his journey into the world of sexual research. His first work includes hiring a prostitute to have sex with a man while he observes through a peephole. Masters and Johnson first meet as he hires her as his new secretary. The pair almost immediately begins their research, aka they watch people have sex. Interested? If yes, tune in Showtime tonight, Sept. 29 at 10 p.m. to view the pilot episode of "Masters of Sex." And if you can't watch the new series live, click here to watch online.
