Mason Greenwood has been reportedly banned from England and Manchester United as police continue to investigate allegations of rape, assault and making threats to kill.
The 20-year-old striker was released from custody on bail by Greater Manchester Police Tuesday after being arrested on suspicion of rape. Greater Manchester Police confirmed, "A 20-year-old man arrested (on Sunday 30 January 2022) on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation."
The Sun reported that England manager Gareth Southgate has no interest in considering him for selection until all potential legal proceedings against him are completed.
Greenwood has not been able to play for England again after being sent home in disgrace following his debut performance against Iceland in a Nations League game in September 2020. After making his debut in Reykjavik, he was told to leave with Manchester City's Phil Foden for breaking COVID-19 quarantine guidelines to meet two women in the team hotel.
The striker was suspended from Man Utd after the allegations surfaced on social media. The club confirmed that he would not play or train with the team while the police carry out their investigation.
The club said in a statement, "Manchester United reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind. As previously communicated, Mason Greenwood will not train with, or play for, the club until further notice."
The Red Devils' most eminent players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and David de Gea, appear to have unfollowed Greenwood on Instagram. Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Fred and Jesse Lingard were among those not following the striker on social media, although Rashford, Lingard and Fred have again followed him back. Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes are also among those players still following Greenwood.
Greenwood has also disappeared from the new version of FIFA 22, a famous football video game. The sportswear giant Nike have suspended their sponsorship deal with Greenwood as well. Meanwhile, Man Utd's shirt sponsors TeamViewer said they are "closely monitoring developments."
Meanwhile, Greenwood's 18-year-old accuser broke her silence after a tough week in order to thank her supporters after the Man Utd star was released on bail. She first made claims detailing the abuse on Sunday.
