Manchester United's 20-year-old striker Mason Greenwood tightened security in his £14,000 ($19,000)-a-month Cheshire mansion following his release on bail Wednesday after being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman.
Greenwood was first detained on suspicion of assault on Sunday after allegations on social media emerged wherein a woman claimed of physical violence and sexual threats. The detectives had been granted an extension to further question him on suspicion of sexual assault and make threats to kill on Tuesday.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said, "A 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation." The rising star is likely to be spending his time in his Cheshire mansion, where police were seen on Sunday. However, it is not known where he currently is.
Following the release, it was reported that two private security guards are currently guarding the house. An expert also came to install a £350 home security system, which can record from up to eight CCTV cameras in 4KHD. One neighbor told Daily Mail, "We haven't seen anything of him. It's a nice modern house. We believe he rents it for £14,000 with all the bills included."
Meanwhile, Manchester United has already issued a statement confirming that Greenwood will not play or train for the club while he is under police investigation. He has also been removed from the club's online merchandise shop and has been taken out of active squads for FIFA 22. The sportswear giant Nike also cut its sponsorship deal with him. One of Manchester United's official partners, Cadbury, claimed not to use him in any marketing products "while these allegations are being investigated."
Several famous personalities and high-profile Man Utd players appeared to unfollow the young forward on the social media platform after the rape and assault allegations. Among Greenwood's teammates who unfollowed him were Victor Lindelof, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Fred, but all of them have followed him back on Instagram.
Greenwood's Man Utd co-players were photographed in training Tuesday as they intensely prepare for their FA Cup fourth-round clash with Middlesbrough.
