The Red Devils striker Mason Greenwood "will not return to training or play matches until further notice," Manchester United announced Sunday, after allegations of domestic violence relating to the footballer emerged.
Man Utd issued a statement in response to allegations being posted with images and audio on a woman's Instagram account, however they are no longer available on social media. The Premier League club stated that they were launching their own investigation before announcing Greenwood's suspension. MThe club claimed that they are aware of images and allegations circulating about Greenwood. "We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind."
A series of photos and audio recordings were reportedly posted by Greenwood's girlfriend, Harriet Robson, wherein she accuses Greenwood of domestic violence, displaying images of what appears to be her lip bleeding plus bruises to her body. However, Robson has taken down the posts Sunday. Meanwhile, CNN has not independently verified the authenticity of the posted pictures or recordings.
According to the Greater Manchester Police statement, "Greater Manchester Police were made aware earlier today (Jan. 30) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence. An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing." Police officials also said that it would not confirm any names of victims or potential offenders.
The 20-year-old star is a Man Utd academy graduate with rising ranks, Greenwood. He has officially made 130 appearances for the club, bringing 36 goals. The footballer made his debut for the club in March 2019, closing a four-year deal in February 2021. Greenwood has yet to issue a response regarding the matter with his girlfriend.
Nike spokesperson, Greenwood's sponsor, told The Athletic, "We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation."
Man Utd is set to play against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday night.
