According to Eurogamer, Nintendo features a special View Ghost option from the Time Trials menu that will let you know exactly what the Nintendo staff use to play every single track of the game. Select the View Ghost option from the Tim Trials menu and cycle to the Mario Kart 8 ghost lap. Hit the + button to get a breakdown on the Nintendo ghost vehicle options. This should give you a very good idea on the sort of hardware you will need to get ahead.
The list is undoubtedly an eye-opener. Of the 32 tracks in Mario Kart 8, Wario is the fastest character in 26 of them. Next Bowser is a far second with a fastest time in only four tracks. Finally, Mii and Morton come in as the last two characters with a fastest time. Next, the sport bike is the fastest vehicle in all but two of the 32 courses. The Gold Standard Kart only managed to steal a fast lap on Thwomp Ruins and Donut Plains 3. Tires play a huge role for grip. Once again, the ghosts reveal that the fastest times are dominated by only the Slick and Cyber Slick tires. Even then, Slick tires are faster than Cyber Slick two out of three times. Last but not least, the best glider option by far is the Parafoil. Bowser Kite is a distant second with only 5 fast laps. Cloud Glider managed just one.
