With Manchester United still looking to make its first big splash in the current transfer window -- a window that closes in early September -- there is a strong indication that the defending English Premier League champions will enter the race for the acquisition of Tottenham midfielder Gareth Bale.
According to The Independent, The Red Devils could officially enter discussions for Bale this week with the club's top competitor being Real Madrid.

Tottenham's discussions with Real Madrid haven't gone as planned and with Man U now set to begin pursuit of Bale, Tottenham may find it easier to deal with the EPL champs for financial reasons.
United have not made a firm offer for Bale and, as the transfer window enters its last three weeks, they will be acutely aware of any attempt to use them as a way of flushing out a serious bid from the Bernabeu, at a time when Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is beginning to doubt whether the Spaniards actually possess the funds.
But United's failure to land a big-money signing this summer may persuade them to make a huge investment, to deliver the boost which is badly needed at the start of the David Moyes era, as well as goals and momentum.

Tottenham value Bale -- a 24-year-old native of Wales who has scored 42 goals in 146 matches with The Spurs since 2007 -- as a player worth a whopping £110 million.
After Real Madrid failed to make a £100 million move they've said they can afford, Tottenham may now only be willing to speak with Manchester United even though Man U won't pay a hefty price, according to Sportige.com.
United won't offer £100 million for one player, that's quite clear, or anything close to that.
There's also the matter of wages. United won't be offering Bale whatever it was Real Madrid were willing to offer.
Even in the case of Tottenham agreeing to sell their best player to a team they see as a direct rival to achieve their ambitions, the Welshman might not agree to move there knowing Real Madrid are still out there, offering the sums they allegedly are.

Manchester United signing Gareth Bale at the beginning of the transfer window probably seemed like a long-shot to most.
Now that Real Madrid hasn't offered the large sum of money the club said it possesses however, there is a strong possibility that the star midfielder could wind up at Old Trafford with only three weeks remaining in the current transfer period.
