With the increase in undocumented migrants to the United States, President Joe Biden appointed Vice-President Kamala Harris to handle the migration crisis on Wednesday, March 24. While Biden’s administration has been heavily criticized since his reversal of stricter anti-immigration laws, this move has drawn further elucidation. One of the highly vocal critics has been Arizona Governor Dough Ducey.
The POTUS announced that Harris would be in charge of talks with Mexico and Central American countries. He said that the vice-president was the “most qualified person” to lead the efforts.
However, Ducey feels that Harris is the “worst possible choice” for the task. Arizona Republic reported that on the same day as the POTUS’ announcement, the governor made these statements while in Tucson. He said that Harris never considered the border problem to be a “serious threat”. In appointing her, the president selected someone who “flat out doesn’t care” about the crisis. This trivialized the conflict, which the president should be taking seriously.
The Republican officeholder has always been a harsh critic of border security policies under Biden’s administration. Ducey, who has been the Governor under three presidents so far, said that this administration’s border control has been the worst, New York Times reported.
He pointed out that the POTUS was “divorced from the reality on the ground” and that Washington had never been more “out of touch”. Putting the blame, of selecting Harris for the job, completely on the president, Ducey said that he should have someone who was passionate about the crisis or someone with experience.
As the former attorney general of California and daughter of immigrant parents, Harris has on multiple occasions spoken passionately about border security and migration. Her stance on Donald Trump’s harsh border control laws stood clearly against that of Ducey’s. Harris called the migration policies “inhumane” and the wall a “vanity project”.
Biden reversed many of Trump’s laws, since which there has been a massive influx in arrivals. Harris acknowledged the increase in illegal immigrant crossing as a “huge problem”. She said that law enforcement should go hand in hand with addressing the root cause of the migration. By establishing partnerships with Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, she will try to mitigate the crisis.
