Manchester United’s biggest stars including Cristiano Ronaldo, David de Gea, and Paul Pogba have unfollowed team-mate Mason Greenwood on social media after he was arrested over allegations of rape and assault.
The arrest came after Greenwood’s alleged ex-girlfriend, Harriet Robson accused the 20-year-old star forward of sexually assaulting her and subjecting her to domestic abuse.
On Sunday morning, the 18-year-old student shared multiple pictures on her Instagram wherein she appeared bruised and bloodied.
"To everyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood actually does to me," Robson wrote in one of her stories.
In the audio clips that followed Greenwood was purportedly heard being abusive and attempting to force himself on the teen, showcasing the damage he had caused to her, both physically and mentally.
By Sunday evening, the Greater Manchester Police arrested Greenwood on suspicion of rape and assault following the allegations. He remains in custody for interrogation.
"Greater Manchester Police were made aware earlier today (Sunday 30 January) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence. An investigation was launched and following enquiries, we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing and the victim is being offered specialist support," a statement from the police read.
The images, videos, and audio recordings, however, are no longer available on the victim’s social media account.
"We remind people to avoid any commentary or sharing of images that could compromise the victim's right to lifelong anonymity, or risk prejudicing a live investigation with active proceedings," the force added.
Enraged Man United fans demanded the club to terminate Greenwood’s contract immediately.
Responding to the allegations and the backlash from the fans, the club released a statement Sunday morning, saying they were launching their own investigation before taking any action against the player.
"We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media,” the statement said.
"We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind."
However, after the arrest, Man United officials announced that Greenwood has been suspended from the team until further notice.
"Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice," a statement issued by the club read.
Greenwood made his debut for the club in March 2019. The team’s most high-profile players, including Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Fred, and Jesse Lingard have shunned Greenwood on Instagram, despite following other squad members.
