Thiago Alcantara has been linked to a Manchester United move in recent weeks, but as he continues to remain in the professional soccer spotlight, the 22-year-old is now reportedly closer to signing with a different club.

According to The Guardian, the Barcelona star has agreed to a four-year deal with UEFA Champions League titleholder Bayern Munich. Joining former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola - who took over for prior Bayern manager Jupp Heynckes recently -- Alcantara will now reunite with the man who watched him develop at Camp Nou.

Prior to the apparent agreement, the 42-year-old Guardiola was adamant about wanting to bring in one of the game's true rising stars instead of watching him land with Manchester United and first-year manager David Moyes. Guardiola told Daily Mail that he's also able to offer Alcantara substantial playing time, something that wasn't a necessary guarantee at Old Trafford.

I want Thiago Alcantara. I have asked Bayern to get him but I don't know what will happen. Thiago is the only player I want, that's what I told them. I know Thiago very well. I talked to Rummenigge and Sammer about him, we will wait and then see.

I don't think adding another midfielder will be a problem for us. I spoke to club about my concept and told them why I want Thiago Alcantara. I give my opinion, but I listen to the board. If they say no, that's ok.

Nobody will leave Barcelona, unless they feel they won't play much. He wants to play. That's why I proposed him to the club.

Man U manager David Moyes was hot on the trail for Thiago since the club is in need of solid midfield play with the recent retirement of Paul Scholes. While the contract with Bayern Munich has not been officially signed, it does not appear that Manchester United will land their prized offseason target.

In 5 seasons with the Barcelona senior squad, the young midfielder appeared in 68 league matches where he recorded 7 goals. Recently guiding Spain to the European Under-21 Championship with a 4-2 victory over Italy, Alcantara notched 3 goals in the final on his way to earning the tournament's Best Player award.
