With the 2013 transfer window nearing a close, Manchester United continues to explore multiple players who would certainly be capable of helping the club retain its 2012-2013 English Premier League title.

First year head coach David Moyes is in the process of researching multiple players including Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas and Tottenham midfielder Gareth Bale but recent reports indicate that Old Trafford is interested in another top level midfielder.

According to ESPN FC, Man U is hot on the trail of current Real Madrid central midfielder Luka Modric, a 27-year-old native of Zadar, Croatia. Prior to joining Real Madrid before the start of the 2012 season, Modric spent 4 seasons with Tottenham, registering 13 goals in 127 appearances.

United seems to have a high level on interest in Modric because it's not a guarantee the club will be able to bring Cesc Fabregas away from Barcelona, prompting a backup plan to be put in place at Old Trafford.

With a £25m bid prepared for Luka Modric and Real Madrid to accept, Man U is clearly indicating the clubs strong desire to acquire high-profile players heading into the upcoming season, something that wasn't initially believed since Moyes and company have been relatively quiet during the offseason.

"Manchester United are more than happy to compete with all of the teams," David Moyes told ESPN FC recently about Man U's desire to financially compete with the biggest clubs in the world. "There has been a change in the dynamic because of PSG coming on the scene recently. That has altered things. But Manchester United will always compete."

"One thing it has got is the history. It has got the name. It has got the success," he continued. "Players do want to be connected to that and one day say they have played for Manchester United. That is a big pull for any player."

The addition of Modric would certainly help Man U bolster a midfield unit that includes capable players such as Shinji Kagawa, Tom Cleverley and Ashley Young.

Registering 4 goals in 46 matches with Real Madrid last season, Modric will surely be interested in returning to the Premier League after spending a season with the La Liga club, helping the team to a second place finish behind Barcelona.
