Manchester United enters the 2013-2014 season as the defending Premier League champions. Despite the fact that many faces will return to help the club defend its title, a new leader will grace the sidelines for the first time in 26 seasons.

David Moyes took over for Sir Alex Ferguson in early July and while the club contains obvious talent up and down the roster, Moyes has not been shy about his desire to strengthen the team during the current transfer period, a window that officially closes on September 2.

While names like Tottenham's Gareth Bale and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo have all been linked with potential transfers to Old Trafford this season, multiple sources indicate that a likely acquisition for The Red Devils could be another Real star not named Ronaldo.

According to ESPN FC, Manchester United has made contact with Real Madrid concerning the club's hopeful signing of Luka Modric, a player they've kept a close watch on throughout the transfer season.

In addition to inquiring about Modric, Man U officials have also discussed the possibility of reeling in Real's Mesut Ozil since David Moyes is set on adding 3 players for this season.

"I'm confident we'll have players in before the start," Moyes said recently. "We're involved in several players we're looking at and that will continue. Will we get them before the deadline? I hope so, but we're working very hard to do so. It was always going to be a difficult window for me personally. I joined on July 1, which has given me a short period."

There is certainly a chance Old Trafford could obtain Ozil, a 24-year-old midfielder who has been with Madrid since 2010, but the likelier deal for the club would be to add Luka Modric to the talented roster, a move ESPN UK notes would probably suit the team better since Ozil is highly regarded by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

As it stands, though, United's best chance would appear to lie with Modric.

Although it has emerged that there have been lines of dialogue open with Ozil's representatives since June, Ozil - whom Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign in the summer of 2010 - is known to be one of Real Madrid president Florentino Perez's favorite players.

At the same time, Madrid's public pursuit of Gareth Bale could radically alter the circumstances.

Despite Real's utter confidence in having the funds to eventually capture Bale this summer, they may seek to ease the financial burden by offloading more players

With only 19 days remaining for Manchester United to make any moves, expect Luka Modric's name to keep popping up concerning a move to Old Trafford. The possibility is still alive that his Real Madrid teammate could depart as well.
