Currently sitting ninth in the competitive Barclays Premier League, Manchester United is in serious need of a boost as the near the midway point of the league campaign. Behind strong clubs in Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City and Everton among others, the Red Devils know their current form won't help them repeat as English league champions. With the January transfer window approaching, first-year manager David Moyes has his sights set on upgrading his squad, particularly at the midfield position. Summer acquisition Marouane Fellaini has struggled to his new surroundings at Old Trafford leaving former Everton manager David Moyes to explore outside help.
According to multiple sources, higher-ups at Old Trafford including Moyes are extremely interested in reeling in current Galatasaray midfielder Wesley Sneijder. The 29-year-old has been linked to possible moves to England in the past, most recently in 2011, but has remained with the Turkish side. Scoring the winning goal in Galatasaray's recent victory over Juventus -- a win that sent them to the knockout stages of the 2013-2014 UEFA Champions League -- Sneijder maintains that he is happy with his career at his home stadium of Türk Telekom Arena.
"I know nothing," Sneijder said when asked about United's interest. "I know only as much as you do, just the reports in the newspapers, which seem to come out every time the transfer window is about to reopen. It's pretty annoying when you're playing in Turkey. The people here are very emotional and passionate about it all. I have no desire to have to justify myself to the people every time my name is in the media. I'm fine here and enjoying myself, and the fact that we progressed in the Champions League is great. I am happy here, but you never know for certain what will happen in football."
If Manchester United does elect to pursue outside help at the midfield position, Sneijder certainly fits as an ideal target. A quick midfielder with tremendous shooting ability, the Utrecht, Netherlands native would become an instant upgrade for a Red Devil squad looking for anything to jumpstart them in the Premier League. Man U did qualify for the knockout stages of the UCL and while they're still viewed as a threat to European opponents, the club undoubtedly lacks at the mid positions.
