Entering his first season as Manchester United boss, former Everton manager David Moyes made it know that one of his primary objectives was to pursue premier players during the 2013 transfer period. While it certainly has been a tough window to this point for Moyes and Man U as far as player signings are concerned, the 50-year-old coach did leave reason to believe that the Red Devils are still interested in one of the best players in the game of soccer.
While recent news indicated that Tottenham star Gareth Bale is nearing the final stages of a deal to join Real Madrid - even flying to Spain ahead of a record-breaking contract - multiple sources report that Manchester United remains interested in the 24-year-old despite the fact that a tabled offer has not come from Old Trafford. The defending Premier League champions could certainly use an added presence along the midfield line and the addition of a player considered to be at the top of the sport with Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo would undoubtedly satisfy that desire.
"I said at the start when I got the job that Manchester United will always be interested in the best players, and we're always looking to try and improve the team," David Moyes said to Sky Sports recently. The owners have given me every opportunity to bring in who I want, and we'll continue to try and find those players. The board and myself would always be looking to sign who we think are the best players, whoever they are."
An official bid has not been placed by Manchester United according to Moyes but that does not mean other clubs haven't expressed interest in the talented midfielder.
A recent report from Yahoo Sports indicated that Real Madrid and Tottenham agreed to what would be a record fee of £86 million, a price tag that eclipses the 2009 deal given to Cristiano Ronaldo at the Bernabeu. Gareth Bale even arrived in Spain over the weekend prior to the completion of any deal but the fact that Manchester United is still interested in the player will leave this subject open until an official deal is inked at any club.
Though Tottenham boss Andres Villas-Boas would obviously love to see his star player remain at White Hart Lane, he understands that top players will be hot commodities during transfer periods.
"There is interest from Real Madrid," Villas-Boas said to FOX Sports. "Whether the transfer will happen or not, hopefully you will have more news in the next couple of days, but at the moment there is nothing I can tell you."
Though Real Madrid will continue to be the favorite to land Gareth Bale, the fact that Manchester United still appears interested adds a completely different and interesting twist into the future of Bale.
