Despite news that club officials will wait until after the current Premier League season to appoint their next coach, Manchester United is still openly discussing plans to revamp the roster during the upcoming summer transfer window following a disappointing 2013-2014 campaign. Following the removal of boss David Moyes – who lasted just 10 months with the defending Barclays Premier League champions – the Red Devils are now set to enter a crucial summer period where they could spend upwards of £200 million on new talent, and if current Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal is handed control of the club, United could make Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben its top target.
According to ESPN FC, the 30-year-old Robben – who has helped the Bundesliga giants claim league championships in three of the last four seasons along with the 2012-2013 UEFA Champions League crown – would sit as the preferred choice for Louis van Gaal since Robben plays for the Dutch National team and also holds added experience with the 62-year-old coach at Allianz Arena in Germany. With prior knowledge of what it takes to succeed in England’s top league thanks to his time with Chelsea, Arjen Robben understands the link between himself and Old Trafford. He’s also thankful to Louis van Gaal’s for holding faith in him throughout his career and says Manchester United would be fortunate to have such a great coach.
“I owe Van Gaal a lot, he really helped me as a player,” Robben said. “I was not always playing for Bayern - but still he continued to pick me for the national team. That faith he showed in me helped me as a player - and then I went on to play some of the best football of my career for Bayern. I was not a special case - he shows faith in all of his players - and that is one of the reasons why players want to play for him - and why they like to play for him. There is something about going into a Van Gaal dressing room and training sessions - there is a positive vibe and a warmth to the place. He creates a special environment for his players - and Manchester United will be very fortunate to have him as their coach.”
While names like German star Marco Reus, Atletico Madrid winger Arda Turan and Bayern Munich talent Toni Kroos sit as viable summer options, expect Manchester United to explore the acquisition of Arjen Robben, especially if Louis van Gaal is hired as the clubs next coach.
