While many supporters of the Manchester United Football Club would like to see interim manager Ryan Giggs land the full-time position, the Old Trafford legend is not receiving the backing of his father, former professional rugby player Danny Wilson. Due to an unimpressive campaign in the Barclays Premier League just a season removed from claiming another championship, Manchester United higher-ups elected to split from first-year boss David Moyes with four matches remaining on the schedule and the open position was given to Giggs on an interim basis.
Despite the fact that Giggs has been a key part in Manchester United claiming 13 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups and 2 UEFA Champions League crowns since beginning his senior career with the organization in 1990, the 40-year-old’s father doesn’t believe his son is capable of leading a prominent club to continued success. Citing an off the field affair Ryan Giggs had with his brother Rhodri’s wife, Danny Wilson noted that United higher-ups should be hesitant about hiring a person who hasn’t shown the ability to be trusted. Wilson also said recently that it pains him to even say his son’s name because he’s so angry with him.
“To be a manager you have to have trust,” Wilson said. “I don’t see how the players can trust him after what he did to his brother. You judge a man by his actions. If you know him to be a cheat, unfaithful and a liar, how do you trust the man? He's a coward and a mummy's boy. I can't even say his name, that’s how p---ed off I am. I went to see him play with Manchester United vs. Cardiff, three or four months ago. I went along because he was on the bench, but when he came on the pitch, I left.”
Though Giggs’ relationship with his father is certainly damaged, the player-coach’s brother – despite the affair – was in favor of United’s appointing of Giggs. “He will have the respect,” Rhodri Giggs posted on Twitter. “Get the old back room staff in & maybe it could work.”
