Manchester United and first-year manager David Moyes continue to search the market for players they feel could help the club repeat as Premier League champions. While it certainly has been something of a struggle for Moyes and company to this point, good news arrived at Old Trafford recently, indicating that a highly-coveted player will be returning for the final year of his contract. With the transfer window officially closing on September 2, the Red Devils will continue to do their research but it obviously doesn't hurt when familiar players remain home.
According to ESPN FC, 26-year-old winger Nani will stay put at Old Trafford, with his current deal set to expire next summer. A 40-goal scorer since joining the Red Devils in 2007, Nani was a hot commodity during the transfer period, drawing interest from Juventus, Anzhi Makhachkala, Galatasaray and Monaco. Despite the fact that Juventus seemed to be the biggest player for the Portugal international, club director Giuseppe Marotta said recently that his side never actually negotiated for the player, only saying that his side was interested in Nani's possible desire for change.
"He's renewed his contract with Manchester United," he told reporters. "We never negotiated for him."
Nani's contract - signed in 2007 for £17 million - is scheduled to run out in 2014 and if Man U elects to avoid resigning the player, the 26-year-old will be free to explore other opportunities while Old Trafford could watch their winger leave via free transfer, something clubs usually don't like to see happen. Marred by injury a year ago where he only appeared in 17 games, Nani has not taken the pitch for Manchester United this season because of a groin injury suffered in a Man U friendly against AIK.
Though the aforementioned clubs continue to show interest, no team has officially tabled an offer for the former Sporting Lisbon star.
