As the 2013 transfer window nears the September 2 closing date, Manchester United and first-year head coach David Moyes continue to explore ways to improve the club's roster. The English Premier League title returned to Old Trafford last season - after spending a year at rival Manchester City - and even though a talented roster remains, Moyes and company have been adamant about upgrading for their title defense. Though some of the bigger names have come off the table, Man U still has its eyes on big time players, one who plays for a rival club.
According to multiple sources, Chelsea's Juan Mata has become a hot topic of discussion at Old Trafford, with Man U already making an informal request about the possible acquisition of Mata. There is also the possibility that Man U and Chelsea could agree to send Mata to Old Trafford in exchange for Red Devils veteran Wayne Rooney. The Blues have maintained all summer that the 25-year-old midfielder is not for sale but if the right situation presented itself, Chelsea may be willing to let Mata depart Stamford Bridge.
With the transfer period nearing completion, both sides believe a deal is possible even if the early talks have been relatively informal.
It's no secret that Chelsea head man Jose Mourinho would like to see Wayne Rooney join the Blues but even though he stated in July that Rooney was his only target, the 50-year-old coach indicated that Chelsea has back-up plans in place should the deal for Rooney fall through.
"We have plans B and C," he said. Don't ask me names. It's difficult to speak about players from other clubs. We have the conditions to try to improve our team by bringing in one more player and we are going to try that till the end."
While Mourinho is interested in Rooney, the good news for Chelsea is that the current Man U star has also expressed his desire to depart Old Trafford after 9 seasons and because Mourinho and company seem to be the ideal fit, the rumored swap for Mata may not be that far fetched.
"Wayne is acting and training professionally at Carrington but is making no secret of his desire to leave," a source close to Manchester United recently told Goal.com reporters.
The fact that rumors are beginning to circulate regarding the future of Juan Mata and whether or not he'll move to Old Trafford in exchange for Wayne Rooney is enough to spark interest from the soccer world.
Until formal talks begin or an actual deal is made, this story is worth keeping an eye on, especially since the transfer deadline is less than 2 weeks away.
