Though Manchester United qualified for the knockout stages of the 2013-2014 UEFA Champions League, the Red Devils are still figuring out how they can get back in the Barclays Premier League race. Currently sitting ninth in the 20-team table with 22 points in 15 matches, Man U finds themselves 13 points behind league-leading Arsenal and 7 points back of Manchester City for the final qualifying spot for the 2014-2015 Champions League tournament. Hoping to repeat as BPL champions under the direction of first-year head coach David Moyes, Manchester United is in serious need of consistency, something that may now be hard to come by in the coming days due to a significant injury.
According to multiple sources, Man U striker Robin van Persie is slated to miss the next month as he recovers from a thigh strain. Suffered in the Red Devils' recent Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk - a win that helped United avoid the first three-game home losing streak since 1962 - van Persie will now be forced to watch as Man U enters a tough stretch of games against league opponents Aston Villa, West Ham, Tottenham, Norwich City and Swansea City. The possibility of van Persie being absent for Manchester's showdown with Chelsea at Old Trafford on January 19 exists as well, but for now manager David Moyes is set on picking up victories while dealing with the injuries to RVP and others.
"Robin van Persie is out for a month," Moyes said. "He picked up a thigh strain in taking a corner kick which led to the goal. It's a big blow and it is unfortunate, because I think if you look at our record with Wayne Rooney and Robin in the team it is actually very good, and we have not had them for quite a period recently. Marouane Fellaini has a bit of a back injury. Michael Carrick is missing, and Robin is going to miss four weeks with a thigh strain. That is a big blow to us."
In 10 Premier League starts this season, van Persie has registered 7 goals and 2 assists, second in tallies only to Wayne Rooney's 8.
