A man has been convicted of torturing an elderly man after he assumed that the victim was a pedophile after the man allegedly made comments that were sexual nature to a 15-year-old boy.
Barry Jones, a 28-year-old man from Exeter in England, has admitted to grievous bodily harm with intent when he tied up a 65-year-old man and proceeded to batter him with a metal table leg for nine hours, the Liverpool Echo reported.
The victim was reportedly at a party with two women when they decided to buy crack cocaine from a dealer. The drugs were later delivered by a 15-year-old boy. After the transaction, Jones was told by one of his female companions that she heard the elderly man say a sexual comment to the boy.
Jones proceeded to punch the victim in the face while in a rage. He then dragged him out to the living room, where he tied the victim up to a chair using gaffer tape lying around in the house, UK Today News reported.
Jones told the victim that he was “[his] hostage for the night” before repeatedly battering him with a metal table leg. He reportedly took pictures of the victim as he beat him up, calling him the "Elephant Man" in tags on social media and proudly telling friends “I’ve just battered a [pedophile].”
The victim, notably, has not been charged or arrested for anything in relation to his alleged comments towards the 15-year-old boy.
After Jones freed the victim, he made him smoke crack cocaine before forcing him to shower with his clothes on, making him promise that he would not contact the police for what he did.
After fleeing from Jones' clutches, the victim called an ambulance for his injuries, which included two broken eye sockets and a broken wrist. The responding doctors shortly called the police who then found Jones’s social media posts and arrested him for the crime.
“This must have been a terrifying experience for the victim to be taped into a chair and told he is a hostage,” Recorder Malcolm Galloway said. “You sent a photograph of his swollen face and joked about him looking like the Elephant Man.”
Nicolas Gerasimidis, the attorney defending Jones, said that this was a spontaneous reaction that was prompted by Jones’ own abusive childhood.
