Man Kills Girlfriend's Seven-Month-Old Brother As Revenge Against Partner's Mom For Opposing Their Marriage

A man has been accused of killing his girlfriend's seven-month-old baby brother in an attempt to take revenge against his partner's mother for opposing his intentions to marry the matriarch's daughter. The incident reportedly happened in Goregaon East, Mumbai, India on Saturday, March 26.

The accused, identified as 24-year-old Kannan Muthuswami, a laborer who worked in Goregaon's Filmcity, was reportedly in a relationship with the victim's older sister. However, when he expressed his desire to marry her, his partner's mother did not approve of their relationship and arranged to get her engaged to someone else. Muthuswami was reportedly angered by his girlfriend's mother's actions and he subsequently confronted the matriarch about it, NDTV reported.

The mother lived with her four children including the accused's girlfriend and the seven-month-old victim on the footpath below the Mrinal Gore Flyover Bridge, Goregaon East. On Saturday, March 26, her two daughters along with her son-in-law had gone to visit a relative. The woman was alone with her two sons when she reportedly fell asleep. When she woke up at around 3:30 a.m. later that evening to go to the bathroom, she found that her infant was missing.

The woman searched her home's premises, hoping to find the child. However, when the boy could not be found, she finally approached the police and registered a missing person case.

“On the complaint of the 40-year-old woman, we registered the case under the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code, and started to probe,” said a police officer.

When the authorities checked the call records of the complainant’s family members, they found Mutthuswami’s number and took him into custody as a suspect for questioning. After the officers interrogated him regarding the missing child, he reportedly confessed to the crime, Mid-Day reported.

Muthuswami revealed that he had plotted to take revenge against his girlfriend's mother for deciding to marry her off to another man. As part of his revenge, Muthuswami kidnapped his girlfriend's seven-month-old baby brother while the mother was fast asleep. He then admitted to smothering the infant to death and dumping the child's body in a water tank near the Bombay Veterinary College in Goregaon.

Following the confession, the officers arrested Muthuswami, charged him with murder, and produced him before the court. The court has remanded him in police custody till March 30.
