Mother Feeds Infant With Rat Poison Due To Her Inability To Provide For The Baby

A 20-year-old mother reportedly killed her 3-day-old newborn baby by feeding the child rat poison, out of desperation over being unable to provide for her infant in Adamawa state, Nigeria on Thursday, March 17.

The young mom, Amina Umar, 20, who hails from Madagali Local Government Area in Adamawa, Nigeria, reportedly bore a child with 20-year-old Buba Musa and gave birth to the baby on March 14. However, since she didn't have the means to take care of the infant, she administered deadly rat poison on the baby, killing the newborn on Thursday, March 17, Daily Post Nigeria reported.

Following the child's death, Umar has been arrested. She is being held with Musa, the deceased child's father, at the Adamawa Police Command headquarters. After the authorities questioned her, she admitted that she killed the child because of a lack of means to cater for both the baby, expressing deep regret for her actions.

Umar reportedly planned her child's murder and sent a boy from her neighborhood to purchase the rat poison, which she later fed to the child. Umar subsequently told her neighbors that her baby had become sick.

However, her neighbors became suspicious of her since they had heard her conversation with the boy who she sent to buy the poison. The concerned neighbors then notified the police about the incident. After officers responded to the scene and questioned Umar, she allegedly confessed to intentionally murdering the baby. The officers then arrested the mother and retrieved the child's corpse for a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, Musa has denied knowledge of Umar’s plan to kill the baby.

In a similar but unrelated incident, twenty-three-year-old Chihiro Saito, a part-time employee, was arrested on suspicion of murder after she allegedly threw her newborn baby from the second floor of a two-story building located in Yotsukaido, Chiba Prefecture, Japan on Dec. 14, 2021, Latin Times reported.

Officers responded to the scene after the staff at a group home for children alerted them that a naked baby’s body had been found behind the two-story building. The authorities immediately transported the child to a nearby hospital for treatment, however, the infant was pronounced dead upon arrival at the facility.

The officers stated that the mother's motive behind the cruel murder remains unclear.
