A Nebraska man has been sentenced to 52 years in prison on Tuesday, Sept. 7, after he repeatedly abused his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter by choking her and hanging her with a scarf to the point of unconsciousness and filming the horrific ordeal.
The cruel caretaker David J. Coleman, a 38-year-old man, reportedly videotaped the recurring abuse, which his ex-girlfriend and the mother of the child discovered on his phone before promptly calling the authorities on him, the Daily Beast reported.
Coleman was handed the sentence after pleading guilty to two counts of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury as well as possession of a knife. Coleman will be eligible for parole in 42 years, according to the Fremont Tribune.
“There was extreme violence here,” Douglas County District Judge Duane Dougherty said. “When someone harms a child that age — or no matter the age — in that nature, it’s as bad as it gets.”
The 2-year-old child survived the incidents of choking, though many are worried about the possible effect these may have on her in the future.
“It has changed this child’s life in ways we may never know,” prosecutor Molly Keane told the court. “How she survived this torture is a mystery. But she did — luckily for her, luckily for her family, and luckily for this defendant.”
This is not Coleman’s first case of child abuse. He has been convicted beforehand for breaking the bones of a child who also suffered burns from a heating pad. In fact, he has only been out of prison for four months when this incident happened.
“It’s beyond what anybody would think someone is capable of doing,” Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said. “As disturbing a child abuse case as we’ve ever seen. “We’re pleased with the sentence and the fact that he’ll never be able to hurt a child again.”
Coleman himself has expressed sadness over his actions as he asks for forgiveness for what he has done.
“I am mortified by these actions. It’s a struggle every day for me. I’m very sorry,” he told the judge.
