Lexus took the luxury crossover market by storm when it first introduced its wildly successful RX 300 CUV. Based on a Toyota Camry platform, the RX 300 is the bestselling SUV model in the Lexus lineup.
As the crossover segment trend continues to move forward, Lexus is now readying a new three-row crossover model to join the RX.
Lexus marketing vice-president Brian Smith explained that its body-on-frame SUVs, the GX and LX, will likely receive a unibody platform for its next-generation model. Speaking with WardsAuto, Brian Smith explained that the use of a new unibody crossover will allow better packaging for the addition of a third row.
"In general, CUVs of any size are becoming a bigger force in the industry. So as we sell more products globally, I think that could lead to new products for us," explained Brian Smith.
The current Lexus RX 350 crossover continues to dominate in its segment. The goldilocks of the category, the RX is larger than the Acura RDX and Audi Q5 crossovers but smaller than the Acura MDX and Infiniti QX60.
