Miguel Ángel López Díaz, known in the world of professional wrestling (lucha libre) as Rey Misterio, passed away in Mexico at the age of 66. The news were confirmed by the Mexican wrestling organization AAA Worldwide on their social media platforms.
López Díaz was the maternal uncle of wrestler Óscar "Rey Mysterio Jr." Gutiérrez, a prominent figure in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), the leading wrestling company in the United States.
This marks the second recent loss for Rey Mysterio Jr.'s family, as his father, Roberto Gutiérrez, passed away just five weeks ago.
Rey Misterio's career
Born on January 8, 1958, in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, Rey Misterio began his wrestling career on January 6, 1976—Three Kings' Day—which inspired his iconic ring name. Over the decades, he became a legendary figure in Mexican professional wrestling or lucha libre, excelling not only as a performer but also as a trainer for future stars.
Known as the "Father of Wrestling in Tijuana," Rey Misterio Sr. mentored several prominent wrestlers, including Konnan, Psicosis, Halloween, and Damián 666. Most notably, he trained his nephew, Rey Mysterio Jr., who rose to international fame in the WWE. He also coached Cassandro, whose life inspired a film of the same name starring Gael García Bernal.
Rey Misterio's legacy continues through his family. His son, known in the ring as El Hijo de Rey Misterio, and his grandnephew, Dominik Mysterio, who currently competes in WWE, both carry forward his contributions to the sport. His impact on the wrestling world, particularly in developing talent, has left an indelible mark on professional wrestling.
The wrestling community and fans are mourning the loss of this legend, whose influence will be remembered forever. Fans have expressed their admiration and gratitude through heartfelt messages, including:
"We've lost one of the greatest wrestlers ever. His legacy will always be remembered."
"Another icon from Tijuana has left us 😢. Farewell, Mr. Rey Mysterio."
"Generations grew up with the Mysterios. The uncle was on another level, giving everything in the ring. Now, he's in the celestial arena. My prayers go out to Mysterio Jr."
