The heat is on! Carmen Aristegui might not downgrade to Laura Bozzo's loud ways of victimizing herself, but instead, she keeps quietly digging into the TV host's past, and what a pot of gold she's found. It turns out that Bozzo was part of a criminal network in Peru and was even placed under house arrest for three years. Aristegui was able to get a hold of Julio Arbizu, a public prosecutor who specialized in crimes of corruption in Peru, who expanded on her case for the public knowledge.
Aristegui went on to explain that Peru carried out a process of a series of illegalities, irregularities, and an "absolutely aberrant behavior for a democracy" in Alberto Fujimori's regime, and it happened when they were trying to divert resources to bribe congressmen, businessmen, journalists and the tabloids, and Laura Bozzo ended up involved in that network. To confirm her research, she asked Arbizu, "Why don't you tell us the story that involves Alberto Fujimori, Vladimiro Montesinos and Televisa's favorite host?"
He replied that the allegations are true and that there was a diversion of the Army's resources to the National Intelligence, directed by Vladimiro Montesinos. Once Montesinos had his hands on the money, he distributed them to everyone involved, who were in charge of promoting Fujimori to guarantee a new reelection. Laura Bozzo was sentenced to four years of house arrest for corruption and also had to pay US $10,000. What she did in her show back in Peru was to distract audiences with other heightened situations that weren't as important, so people would forget the condition of the country thanks to the regime.
After her dark past was exposed, Laura Bozzo took it to her show -- as usual -- and in another attempt to gain the viewers' support after her ratings started decreasing, she defended herself with a tearful statement. "Mrs. Aristegui has attacked me again when she interviewed a Hugo Chavez follower (Arbizu), that followed me for a long time and dug out a case that was handled by Peru justice, for which I was declared innocent, but was under house arrest for three years. I never received any jewelry or US $3 million. You, Mrs. Aristegui, don't know what is like to be in jail. You don't know what it's like that one of your daughters, aged 14 at the time, saw when you were handcuffed unjustly ... Why do you hate me so much?"
Guilty or innocent, the truth is that she might be the target of an investigation right now after her stint as the lord and savior of the victims of Tropical Storm Manuel. "Usurping rescuer functions can be punished with imprisonment," said Aristegui in her radio show. "The administrative laws do not authorize the use of rescue services for individuals, including the use of equipment and the uniform. These are actions for which prosecution is expected."
