Square Enix president, Yosuke Matsuda, recently sat down with Famitsu, a gaming magazine from Japan. According to a report on December 13 by Lazy Gamer, Matsuda discussed the company's plans in regards to the next generation of home consoles, namely PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Matsuda revealed that the company most commonly known for its development, publishing, and distribution of role-playing video games will be shifting its focus towards mobile phones.
Square Enix plans to "port" older titles of video games, while also releasing new video games designed specifically for portable devices. Despite fans immediate concerns, Matsuda did state that Square Enix will still work on their flagship titles, specifically "Kingdom Hearts 3," "Final Fantasy XV" and "Tomb Raider" -- which are said to be released for the PS4 and Xbox One. As translated by Lazy Gamer, Matsuda admitted, "domestic development will not be completely devoted to just smartphone devices. For high-end devices such as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, we will continue focusing on them with our "flagship" titles. We've already announced Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, which our domestic studios are working on, and our foreign studios are working on a sequel for Tomb Raider."
Despite the popularity and loyal fan base associated with Square Enix's flagship titles, the production of the RPG's have been plagued with issues. KH3 and FF15 were both announced at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo, although neither have yet to receive a confirmed release date, and speculation into a longer release date delay seems to be growing. The company released a lineup of new video game releases for the next fiscal quarter, which ends in March 2014, "Final Fantasy XV" and "Kingdom Hearts 3" were both notably absent. KH3 producer Shinji Hashimoto is urging fans to have patience. "A lot of people have wondered for the last couple of years if Square Enix has actually been working on Kingdom Hearts III; that's why we announced it at E3 this year," the "Kingdom Hearts 3" producer told IGN, adding, "But please, we need you all to understand that there's a lot to do."
