John Mayer just pulled a "Taylor Swift" on Taylor Swift! The singer released his new single "Paper Doll" and rumor has it it's a reply to his ex-girlfriend's hit "Dear John."
We all remember Mayer's interview with Rolling Stone, where he said he was "humiliated" by the song and it made him feel "terrible ... because I didn't deserve it."
"["Dear John" is] cheap songwriting," he added. "It's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait till he gets a load of this!' That's bulls**t ... It really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down."
Guess it's time for a little payback.

"You're like 22 girls in one/ And none of them know what they're running from/ Was it just too far to fall/ for a little paper doll?" Mayer sings in the chorus, which some say it's a reference to Taylor Swift's latest single "22" and also "Dear John," when she sings "I'll look back and regret how I ignored when they said run as fast as you can."
Another reference is Mayer's "Here's a dress of gold and blue/Sure was fun being good to you," one of several mentions of dresses. In Swift's song, she referred to herself as the girl in the dress [who] cried all the way home." Later, in "Paper Doll" there's a lyric that goes "Someone's gonna paint you another sky," which seems like a call-back to another "John" line: "You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain."
Coincidence? How about the "moroccan red" scarf that John mentions? Could it be the same scarf in Taylor's "All Too Well"? Or maybe a reference to her album title, "Red"?
Over analysis aside, the song marks John Mayer's comeback and first single of his to-be-released sixth studio album, Paradise Valley, out August, 2013.
