A fugitive sex offender who has been on the run for almost five years after being convicted of being a child sex predator was finally arrested in Mexico on Saturday after he was reported to be working in the area as a teacher.
Brad A. Hatter was arrested in Gwinnett County, Georgia in 2005 for trying to meet with a 9-year-old girl in order to commit sexual acts with her. After organizing the encounter online, he attempted to meet her at the location, only to be arrested at the location by local officials waiting in the area, a U.S. Marshals press release reported.
Hatter ended up being convicted of attempting to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity and was sentenced to 108 months or nine years in prison. He was released in September 2017 on the condition that he regularly check in to a supervising Federal Probation officer and to register as a sex offender, FOX 5 reported.
By January 2018, however, Hatter had gone missing, with him not reporting to his probation officer nor registering as a sex offender in the state. The United States Marshals service was involved in the search for the man immediately by the probation officers.
Hatter was on the run from the law for almost five years, with much of the information gathered by the Marshals pointing to him potentially being in the Philippines to stay in hiding. Eventually, however, authorities in Mexico reported seeing him work as a teacher in the country.
By Saturday, a mix of U.S. Marshals and Mexican authorities were gathered in a brief pursuit against the fugitive Hatter before capturing him and putting him immediately under arrest. He was brought to the United States in Georgia the next day, and is currently in detention.
It is unclear if Hatter will be charged for his actions for the time being.
United States Marshal for the Northern District of Georgia Thomas Brown found himself speaking about Hatter’s capture, saying that “Hatter is now back where he belongs, in the custody of the United States Government.”
