A registered sex offender has been arrested after he snuck into an elementary school and allegedly tried to sexually assault a young girl in the ladies bathroom in Riverside, California on Friday, Aug. 19.
Logan Allen Nighswonger, 32, has been booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center after he jumped the fence of McAuliffe Elementary School in Riverside, snuck into the girl's bathroom, and attempted to attack a young girl inside the lavatory on Friday, Aug. 19, Law & Crime reported.
The authorities received a call from the school at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, regarding a man trespassing into the school and entering the girls’ restroom. The call was made after a campus supervisor found a girl crying inside the girl's restroom as a man, later identified as Nighswonger, was seen exiting the facility.
The supervisor then followed Nighswonger, who was trying to flee the scene, and followed the suspect as he jumped fences to the parking lot and got inside his vehicle. The supervisor noted down the vehicle's license plate number and managed to give a detailed description of the car to the authorities, Latest News Post reported.
Based on the information provided, law enforcement tracked down the vehicle and found that it was registered to a business in the city of Placentia, which is a half-hour drive southwest of Riverside. Following this, Nighswonger was found, detained, and taken to jail.
“We are grateful to our law enforcement partners for their swift action in apprehending and removing this threat to our society,” said Alvord Unified School District Superintendent Allan Mucerino.
“The safety of our students and staff at school will always remain amongst our top priorities,” said Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez. “When that safety is put at risk, we will do everything within the law to quickly find and arrest the person responsible as we did yesterday.”
Nighswonger remains locked up for attempted sex acts with a child under the age of 10 and is being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside without bail. A court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 23.
In 2016, he landed on the California sex offender registry for harassing and molesting a child under 18 years of age. He was also arrested in 2015 on suspicion of exposing himself to students at Mark Twain Elementary in Riverside.
