Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson treated each other not only like best friends but also as sisters. And just like any other sibling, they got on each other’s nerves every now and then.
In her book “My Story,” Fergie detailed an incident that took place during Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding that hurt her deeply. Prince Andrew’s ex-wife said that the Princess of Wales invited her to her royal wedding, and she agreed to attend the ceremony.
But since Sarah didn’t have anything appropriate to wear to the occasion, the late royal gave her some materials that she could use for her dress. A nervous mom of two arrived at St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1981 all by herself.
Prince Andrew’s ex-wife entered the chapel without knowing anyone there. She sat at the designated area and watched the Prince and Princess of Wales exchange their vows. After the wedding ceremony, Fergie stepped out of the chapel by herself, and she admitted that her nerves were all over the place.
It didn’t take very long for the Duchess of York to realize that Princess Diana didn’t invite her to her breakfast reception. But the late royal’s flatmates were all invited. The snub hurt Sarah’s feelings, and it also made her feel fat and unworthy. But in the end, Princess Beatrice’s mom decided to let things slide.
Sarah and Princess Diana’s friendship continued even after that particular incident. Throughout their friendship, the two female royals realized how different they were from each other. But Sarah was always protective of Prince Charles’ ex-wife because she was two years older than her.
Unfortunately for the Duchess of York, the stories she shared in her book didn’t sit well with the Princess of Wales. Princess Diana was especially upset when Sarah claimed that Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom gave her several pairs of shoes and the late royal’s plantar warts.
Sarah and Princess Diana never had the chance to mend their relationship until the latter’s death. While speaking with Harper’s Bazaar, Fergie said that the saddest thing was she never got to speak with the Princess of Wales before her passing.
“I tried, wrote letters, thinking whatever happened didn’t matter, let's sort it out,” Fergie said. “And I knew she’d come back.”
