Princess Diana once denied her involvement in a book that was written about her and her failed marriage to Prince Charles. But the truth was that Andrew Morton actually interviewed the Princess of Wales for his book “Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words.”
In the book “The Firm,” royal author Penny Junor revealed that the Princess of Wales actually lied about her involvement in the book twice. The first time was during her conversation with Robert Fellowes, and the second time was during her conversation with Prince Philip.
“Robert Fellowes, treading difficult ground, not for the first or last time, as both Diana’s brother-in-law and the Queen’s Private Secretary, asked Diana if she had had anything to do with the book,” Junor said. “Diana swore she hadn’t and Fellowes believed her. The Duke of Edinburgh also challenged her and again she denied it; lying, as it turned out, in both cases,” Junor added.
Morton’s controversial book was released in 1992, around the same time that Princess Diana and Prince Charles went on their trial separation. Four years later, the couple agreed to finalize their divorce.
During his interview with the Independent, Morton explained why he felt the need to tell Princess Diana’s story. He said that the reality of the late royal’s life didn’t blend well with the image of her that was being presented to the public.
“Diana’s friends and staff were dropping dark hints about her unhappiness, and she needed the truth to come out, needed to confess,” he said. “It was like Dostoevsky’s moths gathering around the flame,” he added.
Shortly after the book’s release, Morton was criticized and was accused of lying about Princess Diana’s accounts. At that time, the royal author said that he wanted to tell the entire world that the Princess of Wales was in on his latest publication, but he couldn’t say it because she trusted him.
Morton also said that he made the conscious effort to not read the negative criticisms written about him years ago. And he managed to survive because he reminded himself that he never lied about what he wrote.
“I just didn’t understand it,” he said. “By attacking me, they were attacking the Princess of Wales, who wanted the story written.”
