We’ve all heard about Princess Diana’s secret love affair with a Pakistani heart surgeon and how Prince Charles dealt with it, but little is known about how the Princess of Wales actually reacted when she learned about her husband’s affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles. As it turned out, Princess Diana wasn’t always the gentle, charming lady who stole her way into our hearts. For a long time, she was a bomb waiting to detonate — and at one point she did.
When news about Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla broke, Prince Charles tapped the media to help him show himself in a better light. In a tell-all documentary, a friend of Princess Diana revealed that this event marked the beginning of “the detonation of the Diana bomb.”
Vivienne Parry, Diana’s charity partner, revealed in the Amazon Prime Documentary “The Story of Diana” that Prince Charles’ statement to the media made Princes Diana feel that she needed to have a voice again. In the interview, Prince Charles claimed that he was “absolutely faithful” to his wife. This did not sit well with Princess Diana, who had known all along that her husband had never really broken off with his ex-love interest Camilla.
Camilla’s affair with Prince Charles started back in the early seventies, long before Princess Diana became a part of the picture. When Princess Diana confirmed that the two were carrying on an affair during their marriage, she decided to personally confront Camilla, and it was one of her bravest moments ever.
In a party attended by Camilla and Prince Charles, Princess Diana showed up uninvited. Interrupting a conversation between the two and another male guest, the deathly calm princess approached her husband and the male guest and told them she needed to talk to Camilla. “I know what’s going on between you and Charles and I just want you to know that,” Princess Diana told Camilla.
Things took a turn for the worse when Camilla answered back. “What do you want?,” she said. “My husband,” Princess Diana answered. “I’m sorry I’m in the way, and it must be hell for both of you. But I do know what’s going on. Don’t treat me like an idiot.”
Everything started to change since the momentous confrontation. Princess Diana reportedly started her own string of love affairs following their divorce until she died in a tragic car crash in 1997, while Prince Charles married Camilla in 2005. The former mistress is now the Duchess of Cornwall.
