Prince William placed Kate Middleton in a very awkward spot for years. But the Duchess of Cambridge waited patiently until things changed for the better.

In an article she wrote for Vanity Fair, author and broadcaster Vicky Ward said that Kate was in an awkward spot during the time that rumors about a possible engagement started swirling. However, Prince William never proposed to his wife at that time.

It was only in 2010 that the Duke of Cambridge finally asked for Kate’s hand in marriage. And before this happened, the couple even decided to split.

“All the royal press — and former courtiers I spoke to — agreed that until Prince William formalizes their relationship Middleton is in an awkward spot,” Ward said. “She is not officially entitled to any royal benefits paid for by the taxpayers, such as security; she has no spokesperson and is not receiving any official guidance on what to wear or how to conduct herself in royal circles,” she added.

But instead of focusing on the fact that Kate’s position in the royal family wasn’t secured yet, the mom of three opted to endear herself to Prince William’s dad, Prince Charles; stepmom, Camilla Parker Bowles; and grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. This move obviously benefited Kate in the end.

According to Ward, Kate went to dinner with some members of Prince William’s family a couple of times. But Prince Harry took longer to warm up to Prince George’s mom, and some of Prince William’s friends didn’t also like the Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince William’s so-called “Glossy Posse” peers directed some offensive comments at Kate. One of them even went as far as comparing Kate and her younger sister, Pippa Middleton, to the Bouvier sisters. Prince William’s friend said that siblings had an obvious desire to marry well.

Despite all of the criticisms that she has received and the fact that she waited for years before getting engaged, Kate stuck with Prince William. In fact, even amid rumors that the Duke of Cambridge cheated on her with Rose Hanbury, Kate never thought about leaving her husband.
