Kate Middleton is one of the most favored royals today. Before she married Prince William, however, the crowd had some negative comments about the Duchess of Cambridge and her family.
Kate Middleton married Prince William in 2011 and has since then learned the ropes of royal life. While it looks like Kate’s transition from being a commoner to being a royal has been smooth, it hasn’t. In fact, just like any other commoner who marries into the royal family, she also suffered from the intense scrutiny of eagle-eyed royal followers.
Prince William and Kate had a long dating history before their royal wedding. Since Prince William started courting Kate in 2001, there had been speculations as to when they would make it down the aisle. During those dating years, Prince William’s friends subjected Kate under some vicious sniping, where they openly insulted her and her family in front of William.
In an article she wrote about Prince William and Kate in 2008, royal author Vicky Ward revealed how Kate and her family came under fire during her dating years with Prince William.
“There are plenty of snobbish insults from people who, despite Middleton’s obvious attributes, believe that the monarchy needs to stop marrying out of its class,” wrote Ward. “One member of the young polo-playing set in the county of Gloucestershire — known in the British media as the ‘Glossy Posse’— noted, ‘Her parents have a Tarmac drive, for God’s sake.’”
Acquaintances of Prince William also described Kate as extremely controlled and controlling, asking the Prince to reconsider his decision to marry her. Royal biographer Andrew Morton supported Ward’s claim when he revealed in his book how Prince William’s friends treated Kate “abominably” in the early days of their romance.
“Kate was treated abominably behind her back by some who should have shown better manners,” Morton wrote. He added that while most people saw Kate as a pretty and sensible girl, those in Prince William’s royal and aristocratic circles believed that she and her family were too ordinary for the House of Windsor. “It was felt that she wasn’t from the right stock,” Morton wrote.
Apparently, Prince William didn’t pay heed to the remarks of his royal and aristocratic friends. After a few years, he asked Kate’s hand in marriage.
