Kate Middleton fell in love with Prince William while they were still studying at the University of St. Andrews. But not all of the future king’s friends were on board with their relationship.
In the book “William And Catherine,” royal biographer Andrew Morton revealed how Kate felt very early on that some of Prince William’s friends had reservations about her. Even though she was regarded as sensible and pretty, she was also seen as too middle of the road for the House of Windsor.
A Scottish nobleman told Morton that Prince William’s pals felt that Kate Middleton wasn’t from the right stock. “William was expected to find a suitable bride among the aristocracy or European royalty — one of his own kind,” he said. “Kate was treated abominably behind her back by some who should have shown better manners,” the nobleman added.
Meanwhile, Morton also compared the treatment that Kate received with what Princess Diana experienced when she was still alive. Despite the struggles that the Princess of Wales faced while dating Prince Charles, she was known as Lady Diana Spencer and had a title. She also lived in a stately home and was neighbors with the royal family.
“Kate had none of those social advantages,” Morton said. “The insecurities inherent in a budding romance are felt all the more keenly when a commoner falls in love with a prince,” he added.
The royal biographer also said that Kate wasn’t the only person who fell victim to some snobbish jibes. Her parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, also experienced similar treatment.
“When it emerged that William’s upper-class friends thought it amusing to shout ‘Doors to manual!’ when speaking of the former airline stewardess — a story denied by Clarence House — it reinforced some commentators’ view that Kate did not have the ‘breeding’ to become Queen,” he said.
Despite all of the criticisms that she received, Kate still decided to marry Prince William in 2011. Kate also proved that she’s a great wife to her husband and a wonderful mother to their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
