Agustin Lara, or as he is less-commonly known ángel Agustín María Carlos Fausto Mariano Alfonso Rojas Canela del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Lara y Aguirre del Pino (yes that is actually his official name) was honored today by Google Mexico with his very own doodle in celebration of his 113th birthday. Lara was one of the most celebrated composer of songs and boleros throughout Mexico. He is also known as 'El Musico Poeta' (The Musical Poet) or 'El Flaco de Oro' ('The Skinny Man of Gold'). His music was known not only in Mexico but throughout Central and South America. His music has been covered by artists such as Luis Miguel, Josephine Baker, Placido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, Lucian Pavarotti and Javier Solis, among many others. Since his death, his music has become widely known around the world.
Agustin Lara was born in Tlacotalpan in Veracruz in 1900. His family moved to Mexcio City in 1906. His first big song was "La Prisionera" ("The Prisoner") which he wrote in 1926. He began his career on the radio on the show "An Intimate Hour with Agustin Lara." He was also acting and composing songs for movies such as "Santa" (1931). He was well known for his relationships with famous starlets such as Angelina Bruscheta Carral in 1928, Clarita Martínez in 1949, Yolanda Santacruz Gasca "YiYi" in 1953, and Rocío Durán in 1964. However, his greatest love was undoubtedly Maria Felix, who he married in 1945 and for whom he composed songs like "Maria Bonita" and "Aquel Amor."
Agustin Lara received recognition from president Adolfo Ruiz Cortines for his contribution to Mexican culture in 1953. He was even honored by Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, who gave him a house in Granada in 1965. He passed away the 6th of November 1970. By presidential order, he was buried in the Rotunda of Notable People in the Dolores Pantheon, Mexico City. His songs have been played and sung around the world.
