Heading into the opening leg of the 2013 Liga MX Apertura final, both América and León hoped to etch their respective names further into the history of Mexican soccer. Miguel Herrera and his América squad were looking to follow a 2013 Clausura title with a championship in the Apertura while Los Panzas Verdes had visions of claiming the organizations first championship since 1992. A win for Herrera's side would establish América as the most successful Liga MX club of all-time with 12 titles and even though Las Águilas entered as the favorite, León - who finished third in the final standings - were the ones to impose their will early.
Panzas Verdes star Carlos Peña started the scoring early on with a right footed shot from outside the box to put his side up 1-0. With América unable to answer back heading into the second half - even though they attempted 12 shots, with five making their way towards keeper William Yarbrough - León struck once again to pad their lead with just over 14 minutes remaining. When Mauro Boselli's lefty boot from the left side of the box slipped by América and El Tri goalie Moisés Muñoz in the 76th minute, the defending Clausura champs were in trouble with very little time remaining.
Herrera's side was unable to claw back into the opening leg at the Estadio León and even though they'll enter the final match in a two-goal hole, offensive firepower from the likes of Raúl Jiménez, Luis Gabriel Rey and others should not be too far out of the question. Playing at the friendly confines of the Estadio Azteca, Miguel Herrera hopes to once again be a part of a magical moment, after leading América to a championship earlier in the year while guiding the Mexican national soccer team to its sixth-consecutive World Cup.
