With the 2013 Liga MX Apertura final set to begin on Thursday, December 12, América and León, two of the most popular teams in Mexico, hope to be the final club standing after another long and exciting season officially comes to a close. The opening leg will be played at the Estadio León and with both teams coming in with loads of confidence, the 2013 Apertura final could be one of the most entertaining series the Mexican league has seen in recent time.
América is going for the club's twelfth championship after claiming the 2013 Clausura title over Cruz Azul and even though a rematch between last season's finalists did not come to fruition, a match-up pitting Las águilas and Los Panzas Verdes should provide loads of entertainment. América needed a strong effort in the closing leg of their semifinal against Toluca after falling behind 2-1 at the conclusion of the first leg. Shutting out their opponents with a 2-0 performance in the next leg, América now has a chance to become the winningest club in Mexican soccer history.
While Las águilas and manager Miguel Herrera prepare to potentially make history, Los Panzas Verdes have their sights set on a different outcome. After taking down quarterfinal opponent Morelia by way of a 7-3 aggregate, León blitzed past Santos Laguna in semis. Providing themselves with a 3-1 cushion after the opener, Oribe Peralta and company used a 2-2 draw to advance 5-3 over Santos, setting up an extremely interesting final. América's success in the league has certainly been well documented over the years while León hasn't made as much noise. A win in the final however would give Los Panzas Verdes their first league title since 1992.
