It looks like 2014 will be the year of "Game of Thrones," but I am not complaining. In addition to the fourth season of the hit showing arriving in spring of 2014, it seems like GoT fans have even more to be excited about with the coming of a new year, a brand new "Game of Thrones" video game! So who is the brain behind this massive operation of a video game? Well of course Telltale Games, the studio responsible for the award winning "Walking Dead" video game. According to the Verge, rumors regarding the epic video game began to swirl last month, but the news was only officially announced at Spike's 2013 VGX Awards on December 7. In accordance to the signature Telltale Games style as displayed by their more popular titles, namely "The Walking Dead" and "The Wolf Among Us," the "Game of Thrones" video game will be released in an episodic series, starting in 2014, although the exact release date is still very much unknown.
For those of you that are weary of your favorite TV show begin transformed into a video game, have no fear, because Telltale Games is gearing up with HBO, meaning that it will bear more similarity to the TV show than George R. R. Martin's original "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. And while this may be bad news for us loyal book worms, not every adaptation can be exactly the same as GRRM's books, and while I am fiercely resistant to change when it comes to my favorite characters, the storyline needs to be sped up in the video game in order to be playable. "We'll be taking advantage of all the fiction to make something great," said Telltale CEO Dan Connors during the announcement at the VGX 2013 awards show. "We're just really getting into it right now and thinking about characters -- who has the most at stake, who has the biggest impact on the world."
While Telltale's game is certainly going to the best "Game of Thrones" video game yet, there have been other mediocre attempts to capture the world of Westeros for gamers. An action role-playing game of the same name was released last year to so-so reviews, in addition, a free-to-play MMO is in the works. But these are child's play when compared to what we expect from Telltale, according to MTV, gamers should expect story-driven game-play, with "freedom to make very good and very bad decisions." And one should never forget, "when you play a game of thrones you win or you die."
