“Game of Thrones” Season 4 premieres is less than 60 hours away, if you’re obviously counting down like me. But before the Season 4 premiere “Two Swords” arrives, fans are still speculating about the forthcoming season. Based on episode titles, the first half of Season 4 will most likely focus on the progressing storylines in Kings Landing, most notable the Lannisters and the Tyrell. Where as the latter half of Season 4 seems to be focused on locations far from the capital, mainly, The Wall with Jon Snow and the Men of the Night’s Watch, North of Wall with Bran and Reeds, the Kingsroad with Arya and the Hound, Dragonstone with Stannis and Melisandre, and even the Fingers with Petyr Baelish. So what causes the shift in action? Well mainly what occurs in the middle of Season 4, specifically episode 5, “First of His Name” and episode 6, “The Laws of Gods and Men.”
Like it’s preceding episode, “The Laws of Gods and Men” is a phrase viewers of “Game of Thrones” have heard previously. But the association is not a pleasant one, viewers first heard the term in “the laws of gods and men” when discusses the guest right in Westeros, the ancient and sacred tradition states that once a guest eats the bread and salt of the host, then no harm can come to them for the length of the stay under the host’s roof. The guest right was notably broken during the Red Wedding, when Walder Frey extended bread and salt to Robb Stark, and then slaughtered him and his companions under the request of the Lannisters. To break guest right is considered to be an utterly heinous crime, breaking all “the laws of gods and men.” The homage to the Red Wedding, and the connections to both the Frey’s and the Lannister’s in the title infers that episode 6 will heavily focus on the two families, and most likely some retribution from either men of gods for the violation of guest right.
In addition to the episode title, fans have learned from the Season 4 trailer, that Tyrion Lannister will find himself in an even more precarious situation, one lacking “justice.” Episode 6 may also focus on the impeding judgment for Tyrion, he may be freed from his imprisonment by “The Laws of Gods and Men.” Episode 6 will be a turning point in Season 4, in terms of both morality and physical power. While King Joffrey Baratheon feels the War of the Five Kings is settled, his “uncle Jamie” diligently reminds him “the war is not won.” The warning seems to be the tone for Season 4; we anticipate more Lannister threats to arrive.
