The cast of season 4 is filling up! And another “Rome” veteran is joining the large ensemable cast of HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” Actress, Indira Varma who played Niobe on the TV series “Rome” which ran for a short two seasons between 2005 and 2007, will be appearing in season 4 of HBO’s new hit show. Varma will portray the character of Ellaria Sand, who is the paramour of another new character appearing in season 4, Prince Oberyn Martell. Martell’s character also known as “The Red Viper” will be played by Pedro Pascal, Martell describes his lover as “being sexually adventurous and potentially bisexual.”

Varma’s character is the mother of Martell’s four youngest daughters, they are called the “Sand Snakes,” meaning they are Martell’s bastard daughters. The surname Sand comes from the fact that Ellaria herself is the bastard daughter of Lord Harmen Uller, a nobleman of Dorne.

Last week at Comic-Con in San Diego, the show’s producers and cast spoke to Entertainment Weekly and revealed that season 4 will be the best season yet.

“We got more action, which is obviously more time consuming,” says showrunner David Benioff. “It’s a brutal shooting season ahead. But if we can make it through, yeah, I think it’s going to surpass season three. The last three episodes, there’s so many scenes we’ve been waiting for so long to do. And it just gets more and more fun to write for these characters. After three years of doing it, we have that much more comfort to make everything uncomfortable for them. We’re very excited for it.”
